Learn more about Cretan cuisine and the way it was shaped over centuries by various influences but always using fresh local ingredients as the base for its delicious recipes. Visiting some of the town’s age-old food stores and produce sellers, you will get a chance to sample the “fruits” of the Cretan land. Savor some rustic local cheeses and artisanal bread. Meet the last traditional ‘phyllo’ master of Crete and watch him create his ultra-thin pasty by hand in his workshop, housed in a Venetian mansion, that first opened back in 1958 and remained utterly unchanged throughout the years. Line up with locals for a traditional ‘kaltsouni’ savory pie, mingle with older Cretans in a typical kafenio for a fresh ground coffee, ‘raki’ or a game of tavli, visit an old-school patisserie and try to resist the freshly made local desserts. An easy walking pace is well-timed with plenty of rest stops making it a family-friendly tour for all fitness levels.
