Discover the wonders of the Kingdom of Bahrain
As promised yesterday, we will take you to discover some wonderful places of the Kingdom of Bahrain every day during this special Bahrain week on www.moretravelforyou.com
Let’s start our virtual tour with Manama, the capital of the Kingdom
Manama, the new city
This is where modern Bahrain comes to life! Manama being very large, we advise you to first cross the Bab al Bahrain gate, and dive into the city’s souk! Be warned, the old displays have given way to small air-conditioned shops. However, the charm operates and we quickly get a taste of getting lost in the maze of streets with spices, textiles and lighting. Be sure to visit the Sri Krishna Temple, one of the largest Hindu temples in the Middle East. The souk is also full of small cafes where you can taste karak, a typical black tea with milk. You will probably be able to chat with some Bahrainis, very welcoming and for some, happy to share some memories of trips in Europe or elsewhere with you.
Qal’at al-Bahrain
Also called the Bahrain Fort, it is one of the greatest remains in Bahraini history. What few people know is that Bahrain has more than 4,500 years of history, and was, long before the Arab and Portuguese invasions, a hub of Eastern trade, led by the Dilmun civilization. Bahrain Fort is a testament to this rich past. Listed as a UNESCO since 2005, the excavations of the fort prove a little more each day the extent of the activity at the time. The interior of the fort, with its sublime stone walls and doors, ensures a pleasant stroll. A walk around the fort is also a great way to appreciate the local life, with many families and couples circling the ramparts as the sun sets.
Ahmed Al Fateh Mosque
This is another Bahraini staple. The country is of course full of many traditional mosques, of all sizes and ages. The Ahmed Al Fateh Mosque is worth a visit, already for its size, which can accommodate up to 7,000 people. But above all, it is a superb example of a modern mosque, with its refined and sober architecture, more rare. You will also be able to benefit from a guided tour in English or French, and chat in peace about Islam and other topics with the local guides, a culturally uplifting experience.
Bahrain Bay
Located north of Manama, Bahrain Bay is a booming modern district. If you’re a fan of large luxury hotels, a promenade overlooking the skyscrapers, and chic rooftop restaurants with breathtaking views of the city, this is the place to go. Bahrain Bay helps bring a more modern view of the country. It should be noted that half of the population comes from expatriation. Obviously, the impact on local development is enormous. In the evening, come and enjoy a stroll with the locals, as well as a beautiful view of the futuristic building of the Bahrain World Trade Center, shaped like the sails of a boat.
