The Acropolis Museum<\/strong><\/p>\n

Reopened in 2009 after several years of restoration, this splendid museum with very modern architecture exhibits only pieces found following archaeological excavations carried out on the Acropolis site. There are nearly 4,000 exceptional objects there, including the statues of the archaic gallery, or the caryatids, these statues of women who supported the sanctuary of the Erechtheion. These are the originals, the ones that can be admired on the Acropolis are reproductions. On the top floor, a huge room of over 3000 m\u00b2 awaits visitors. Exclusively dedicated to the remains of the Parthenon, we can see there in particular a piece of the famous frieze of the Panathenaia. A multimedia center also shows documentaries on the construction of the temple, the dimensions and construction techniques of which remain a mystery to historians to this day. The Acropolis Museum is inseparable from a visit to the Acropolis, of which it is an extension.<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course, it is impossible to talk about Athens without mentioning its famous Acropolis (from the Greek meaning “upper town”), a rocky plateau overlooking the city from a hundred meters. Formerly serving as a citadel serving to protect the city, it is also at the top of this sacred hill that one of the most visited archaeological complexes on the planet is located, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can see several major sites dedicated to the goddess Athena, such as the Parthenon, the temple of Athena Nike or the Erechtheion, a temple dedicated to the goddess Athena but also to the god Poseidon. But also many other monuments such as the Propylaea, columns located at the entrance to the Acropolis, the Agora, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, or the theater of Dionysus. Impossible to go to Athens without visiting the Parthenon<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The imposing silhouette of the Parthenon dominates the Acropolis and has served as a landmark for Athenians since the dawn of time. Built in honor of Athena in the 5th century BC. AD, the temple once housed a statue of the Greek goddess unfortunately destroyed during the siege of Constantinople. While the Parthenon has lost its luster today, it remains a symbol of the power of Athens in its heyday. We are speechless in front of the colossal dimensions of the monument and its high Doric columns, a real architectural feat for the time. Another wonder of the Parthenon, the frieze of the Panathenaia which surrounded the temple on nearly 160 meters in length. Today, fragments of this frieze are kept at the Acropolis Museum, the Louvre in Paris, and the British Museum in London. The Parthenon is now one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.<\/span><\/p>\n

Another exceptional place to visit is The Temple of Athena Nike<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Nike meaning Victory in Greek, this small sanctuary perched on a promontory facing the sea pays homage to the goddess Athena Victorious. In an Ionic style, this all-marble temple built in the 5th century BC has been repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt throughout its history. According to legend, it was here that Aegeus scanned the sea awaiting the return of her son. The latter on his return made a mistake and raised a black veil announcing his death, instead of a white veil, a sign that he was coming back safe and sound. Believing his son was gone forever, Aegean threw himself into the sea which now bears his name.<\/span><\/p>\n
