Week dedicated to Greece
Ben Gurion Airport is still closed until at least March 6, but nothing prevents us from starting to prepare for your next trip to Greece.
Especially since the State of Israel and Greece have signed agreements and very soon, vaccinated Israeli travelers will be able to travel to this wonderful country without constraint, and especially without having to undergo isolation on their return.
We are therefore going to dedicate this whole week to this country so close to our borders.
In this southern European country and its islands, the remains of ancient Greece continue to fascinate archeology enthusiasts. Athens, Delphi and Thessaloniki are just a few examples of must-see cities for walking in the footsteps of Greek history and mythology.
While the tradition of hospitality is tending to disappear in large, crowded cities, the warm welcome from the locals still balances the heart in small villages. In the islands, the atmosphere is soft and peaceful. The medieval city of Rhodes, the immaculate white houses of the Cyclades and the Minotaur’s lair in Crete are all attractions that promise a real change of scenery. A trip to Greece always promises to be a busy one.
And for an authentic stay, do not miss to discover Crete, the largest of the Greek islands.
Let’s start this week dedicated to Greece by discovering Athens
On our first opus on this mythical country, we will start to make you discover Athens, capital of the country, of course obligatory passage during your next stay in the country of the Hellenes.
When you are in Athens, there are a series of must-see places that we suggest you visit :
The Acropolis Museum
Reopened in 2009 after several years of restoration, this splendid museum with very modern architecture exhibits only pieces found following archaeological excavations carried out on the Acropolis site. There are nearly 4,000 exceptional objects there, including the statues of the archaic gallery, or the caryatids, these statues of women who supported the sanctuary of the Erechtheion. These are the originals, the ones that can be admired on the Acropolis are reproductions. On the top floor, a huge room of over 3000 m² awaits visitors. Exclusively dedicated to the remains of the Parthenon, we can see there in particular a piece of the famous frieze of the Panathenaia. A multimedia center also shows documentaries on the construction of the temple, the dimensions and construction techniques of which remain a mystery to historians to this day. The Acropolis Museum is inseparable from a visit to the Acropolis, of which it is an extension.
Of course, after the museum, go see the wonders of the Acropolis site
Of course, it is impossible to talk about Athens without mentioning its famous Acropolis (from the Greek meaning “upper town”), a rocky plateau overlooking the city from a hundred meters. Formerly serving as a citadel serving to protect the city, it is also at the top of this sacred hill that one of the most visited archaeological complexes on the planet is located, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can see several major sites dedicated to the goddess Athena, such as the Parthenon, the temple of Athena Nike or the Erechtheion, a temple dedicated to the goddess Athena but also to the god Poseidon. But also many other monuments such as the Propylaea, columns located at the entrance to the Acropolis, the Agora, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, or the theater of Dionysus. A whole program that takes us to the height of Antiquity!
Impossible to go to Athens without visiting the Parthenon
The imposing silhouette of the Parthenon dominates the Acropolis and has served as a landmark for Athenians since the dawn of time. Built in honor of Athena in the 5th century BC. AD, the temple once housed a statue of the Greek goddess unfortunately destroyed during the siege of Constantinople. While the Parthenon has lost its luster today, it remains a symbol of the power of Athens in its heyday. We are speechless in front of the colossal dimensions of the monument and its high Doric columns, a real architectural feat for the time. Another wonder of the Parthenon, the frieze of the Panathenaia which surrounded the temple on nearly 160 meters in length. Today, fragments of this frieze are kept at the Acropolis Museum, the Louvre in Paris, and the British Museum in London. The Parthenon is now one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
Another exceptional place to visit is The Temple of Athena Nike
Nike meaning Victory in Greek, this small sanctuary perched on a promontory facing the sea pays homage to the goddess Athena Victorious. In an Ionic style, this all-marble temple built in the 5th century BC has been repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt throughout its history. According to legend, it was here that Aegeus scanned the sea awaiting the return of her son. The latter on his return made a mistake and raised a black veil announcing his death, instead of a white veil, a sign that he was coming back safe and sound. Believing his son was gone forever, Aegean threw himself into the sea which now bears his name.
And to conclude, but for today only, our visit to Athens, we also invite you to visit The Agora
This large wasteland on the Acropolis was the center of the social and intellectual city of Athens under Ancient Greece, where the people gathered to pass laws during large assemblies, or quite simply to exchange views on political and cultural subjects. news. It contained all the public and administrative institutions of the city.
