Discover Greece Opus 2
Today we continue to visit the must-see sites for your next trip to Greece with us.
We continue to explore the capital Athens
Let’s discover the Erechtheion together
One of the most important sites of the Acropolis along with the Parthenon, it was also one of the most sacred places for Athenians. Dedicated to the worship of the goddess Athena and the god Poseidon, the fairly well-preserved temple is famous for its six caryatids, these statues of women serving as columns to maintain the structure of the temple.
The National Archaeological Museum is also a must see
Comparable to the Louvre Museum, the National Archaeological Museum of Athens is one of the most important museums in the world dedicated to Antiquity. Inside, a huge collection of nearly 12,000 pieces dating from Ancient Greece awaits visitors: ceramics, statues, pottery, sculptures, bronzes… Masterpieces retracing the great periods of history and ancient Greek civilization, from the Neolithic to the Roman period. A few rooms are also dedicated to Egyptian Antiquity. Among the essential works, the gold mask of Agamemnon, the frescoes of Akrotiri, the horse of the Artemission, or the famous Kouroï, statues representing young men and korái, for young women, known in the world of art to be one of the first manifestations to represent the anatomy of the body symmetrically.
In the heart of Athens Syntagma square
Right in the center of Athens and a few steps from the Acropolis, Syntagma Square is a lively place constantly frequented by locals and tourists who meet there to chat on a bench, or meet in the ‘a large number of shops surrounding the square. Place of Athenian political life (Syntagma translating to Constitution), the square is home to the former royal palace, which has become the Greek Parliament since 1935. Seat of power, this is where all political assemblies and demonstrations are held. We linger there to admire the changing of the guard of the soldiers dressed in the traditional Greek uniform, a millimetric choreography regulated like a clock which starts again every hour.
The Plaka district
This is the most touristic area in Athens. Not necessarily attractive in high season, because tourists flock to the many souvenir shops that invade the alleys and where the slogan “I LOVE GREECE” is plastered on every street corner. There are many addresses where you can find food. ‘you can order Greek specialties at any time.
Monastiraki district
Less touristy than Plaka, Monastiraki is the place to go to experience Athenian culture and lifestyle. Entirely pedestrian, the visit of the district is very pleasant. We stroll through the charming alleys before settling down on the terrace of a restaurant. But the area is best known for its flea market. A popular spot loved by locals, and always hot.
The Halls of Athens
The ideal address for anyone wishing to discover Greek gastronomy. The warm place is filled with the scents of the Mediterranean: fresh fish and other seafood, olive oil, colored fruits, meats, absolutely anything! Les Halles is therefore well worth a stopover to fill your stomach.
Mount Lycabettus
After a busy day, we gather our last strength to climb to the top of Mount Lycabettus, the perfect spot to contemplate the sunset and enjoy an exceptional view of the white houses of the city. Once night has fallen, we descend by the funicular to reach the trendy districts of Psirri or Ghazi, places where Athenian nightlife is concentrated.
The port of Piraeus
The most important port in the country, but also one of the largest in Europe. The port of Piraeus is part of the economic and maritime history of the city of Athens. Today cruise ships anchor there for a shore excursion, while ferries pick up passengers bound for the beautiful Greek islands. But Piraeus is also a tourist spot in its own right: the port is lined with restaurants and taverns where you can taste the tasty freshly caught seafood. As for the marina, you can walk around while admiring the luxurious moored yachts.
And to conclude, for today, Lake Vouliagmeni
South of Athens, Lake Vouliagmeni is a natural nugget nestled at the foot of the cliffs, not far from the sea. Maintained at a constant temperature of 22 ° C, the waters of the lake are ideal for swimming and also have numerous curative virtues due to the strong presence of potassium, sodium, calcium … we dive head first! Some areas by the lake are privatized and allow you to enjoy beaches equipped with deckchairs, umbrellas, and shower cabins.
